Welcome to the Truckbase weekly recap. We explore the past week’s market insights using real data from carriers, including our own 60+ truck fleet!
This past week has been quite the week in the freight market. Let’s dive in!
hot markets
The best market for freight in the US remains Laredo, TX.
In Laredo, the best lanes are for loads going to Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, and Texas. Right now, it’s definitely worth it to take lower RPM loads to Laredo to take full advantage of the hot loads in the area.
Another couple of great markets this past week were Jackson, MS and Memphis, TN. Both of these markets have been historically good and this past week was no exception.
Surprisingly, Wilmington, NC has also been a great market this past week. It shot up in the ranking by a whooping 97 ranks. We even had a few of our drivers run in the area and see some great rates out of the area. Overall, the whole east coast has been seeing good rates these past few weeks; definitely something we don’t see every day.
Another market that heated up significantly was Albuquerque, NM. Shooting up 89 ranks, it’s now the 14th best market in the US and likely to hold that spot for the coming few weeks. More broadly, the whole NM area is start to slowly heat up.
And finally, a historically bad market, Colorado, has actually started trending upwards. We saw some decent rates in the area last week and we’ll keep an eye on things this week to see if it’s a trend.
cold markets
On the flip side, the California markets are start to stall and drop a little. The past few months has been great towards California drivers but we’re seeing a noticeable stall and slight decrease in the loads coming out of California. In particular, Fresno, CA and San Diego, CA, two distinct parts of California reported lower volume this past week and each lost around 30 ranks this past week.
Also, not every Texas market area is hot right now. Both Dallas and Lubbock, TX have been crashing quite rapidly this past week. A month ago, Dallas was a great market area for pickups. Now, we’re seeing far lower volume for Dallas and that’s even dragging down the greater LA region as well. At this point, deadheading to hotter market areas in Texas might be a better option than getting stuck with the Dallas rates.
We’ve also been seeing the Missoula and Pendleton markets decline further this past week with worse rates and fewer loads in those areas.
And that’s all for this week’s weekly recap. Check back in next week for more updates!
